Vena Grebenshikov (b. 1955) is a classically trained painter. Using his knowledge of the history of art and the methods of the masters, Vena innovated his own technique imbuing his works with their distinct style and texture.
Using a palette knife, he moulds the paint to create forms and texture on the canvas. Once the desired structure is achieved, he scrapes away excess paint creating and refining the detail within the image. Over time, he has developed a specific formula of paint that allows him to manipulate the mixture on the canvas to create sharp details and relief. His works also incorporate gold, silver, and bronze copper leaf. Through this combination of colors and textures, Vena captures the sound, feel and texture of his subjects.
